LIVES IN THE ALLEY · STREETS & SAFETY

A Cat Has No Promise the Car Will Stop

A road we cross without thinking can be the most dangerous part of another animal’s day.

For us, a street is often the space between destinations. Somewhere to park, somewhere to hurry through, the last turn before home. For a cat living outdoors, resting places and daily routes occupy that same moving space. Another life is taking place inside the background of ours.

A record from the RSPCA’s Friern Barnet Adoption Centre gives that danger a name: Henry. He arrived as a stray after a road traffic accident and needed a hind leg amputated. The centre later recorded that he had been rehomed in January 2016 and was settling in well. Source ↗

A passing moment. A longer aftermath.

The record does not tell us why he was on the road. We do not know whether he was hungry, startled or following a familiar route. There is no need to invent that moment. What we do know is that an accident was followed by treatment and the need for somewhere to recover. The consequences lasted much longer than the passing of a car.

Even a stationary vehicle can be part of the problem. Cats Protection notes that cats sometimes hide beneath parked cars or seek warmth around engines. A place that offers cover can become dangerous when the vehicle starts moving. Source ↗

It is tempting to look at a street cat and assume it knows how to manage traffic. Looking familiar with a place is not a guarantee of safety. Henry’s later home matters because his recovery was more than an act of solitary endurance: care and somewhere to live were part of what came next.

A look beneath a parked car before leaving. A slower approach when a cat is beside an alley. Such attention cannot remove every danger, but it can change what we do in the moments we control.

A street we crossed without thinking may have required much more from another body. Sharing a neighbourhood begins, perhaps, with remembering that our route home runs through someone else’s day.

01

A shared route

Our paths through a neighbourhood overlap with the places cats live.

02

A place to hide

Cats may shelter beneath cars or around engines: a reason to look before moving.

03

What comes after

An accident can leave a need for treatment, recovery and somewhere to live.

Follow Mia’s day

In Pawpi Episode 1, Mia pauses beneath a car while searching for somewhere to go. The scene is fictional, not a retelling of Henry’s experience. We hope that small pause leaves room to notice the real cats sharing our streets.
