LIVES IN THE ALLEY · BODIES & MOVEMENT

Not Every Cat Can Clear the Wall

We take feline agility for granted. But not every body can meet that expectation.

When a cat pauses below a wall, it is easy to finish the movement in our minds. A crouch, a spring, a soft landing on the other side. We have seen cats do it so often that we can forget to ask whether this particular cat can.

Cats do not all move with the same balance, strength or ease. An awkward step does not tell us why. Sometimes we are watching a momentary mistake; sometimes there is more about a body than we can see from the pavement.

A body has a story beyond one moment

In a 2024 account, the British charity Battersea introduced Lofty, a kitten with cerebellar hypoplasia whose head moved with an involuntary wobble. The charity described him as energetic and free of pain, and recorded his time in foster care. This was not presented as a street-rescue case. It was a glimpse of a cat whose different movement still left plenty of room for a good life. Source ↗

Other cats encounter changes as they grow older. AAHA and AAFP guidance notes that altered jumping or climbing in senior cats can be associated with joint disease or muscle weakness. A favourite high spot left unused may deserve closer attention than the assumption that a cat has simply lost interest. Source ↗

A wall in an alley does not lower itself. From this essay

Now consider what a difficult jump could mean for a cat living outdoors. In a home, someone may notice and provide a lower step. A wall in an alley does not lower itself. What looks to us like an obvious shortcut may require another route, more time, or a place to stop.

Admiring feline agility should not make us assume that every cat will manage alone. There is room in our idea of a cat for an uncertain landing, a slower body and a different way of getting somewhere. We can love their remarkable abilities without demanding them from every animal we meet.

The next time a cat hesitates at a wall, perhaps we can leave the ending open for a moment. The height we see may not be the height that body has to face.

01

One uncertain step

A single awkward landing cannot tell us what is happening in a body.

02

Changes worth noticing

Avoiding a once-familiar height can be a reason to pay closer attention.

03

Another way to live

Different movement can still leave plenty of room for play, comfort and care.

Follow Mia’s day

Mia’s awkward landing in Pawpi Episode 1 is a small fictional invitation to look again. It does not establish a medical condition for the character. Follow his first day with a little more room for a cat who does not do everything gracefully.
